2021.10.16 01:47 fabdancer95 Experienced trauma without being able to verbalize it?
I don’t know how to say this, but does anyone else feel like they’re dealing with consequences of experiencing sexual harassment without really being able to say what specific trauma you went through?
I’ve had several recent experiences with sexual harassment and older men “joking” that they’d kidnap and/or stalk me, but I feel like I’ve been experiencing sexual harassment my whole life, if that makes sense. My fiancé and I recently watched Bombshell and I straight up sobbed at least twice through the movie. I feel like I’ve experienced a lot of trauma and sexual harassment, and I want to talk to my therapist, but I don’t even know where to start because I feel like I can’t remember all the experiences.
I’m sorry for the somewhat incoherent rant. I don’t really know how to explain this.

Well now I feel old. DH wanted to watch all of the Treehouse Horror episodes in chronological order this month. Our 14-year-old occasionally watches the Simpsons with us. He usually likes it. After three episodes, he said that he doesn't find the early seasons funny and he doesn't understand them. He doesn't get the jokes.

2021.10.16 01:47 Glittering_Carrot923 What does it mean to withdraw from a school?
So I got into an argument (it was more just me laying into him tbh) with this guy I was interested in who I met during orientation cuz he totally forgot that we were supposed to hang out like 3 separate times. Anyway, yesterday when he forgot again he was gonna reschedule to hang out this weekend but this morning he was like “actually, I’m withdrawing from school for now so I probably be gone by the end of today”. That was a very rapid 180, but ok.
Anyway, I’m a bit confused as to what it means to withdraw from a school. Is it the same as just dropping out, or is it like a temporary leave for the semester or school year? Like, is he gone forever? I don’t wanna be nosy and ask him (I also just kinda responded with “good luck with that” when he texted me that). Will I never see him again? It just seemed kinda sudden and out of the blue and idk what he really meant.

2021.10.16 01:47 copperheadjane Can Cardboard Attract Bugs? pt1
I hear a crunching noise, as I lose my balance. The roach that scuttled out of cardboard mountain is so big, so squelchy. I don't even know what's in most of these boxes. We moved in over three months ago, beginning of August. If we don’t unpack soon, we are going to miss our window. It’s going to get really cold soon. It’s not like home - they have a real winter here. I don’t want to put this off until spring. But every weekend I'd rather fall into a bathtub full of gin and tonic than go through boxes full of shit that I don't know where to put.
“LIAM!” I shout. “WE’RE GOING TO BE LATE IF YOU DON’T GET IN THE CAR RIGHT NOW!”
My thirteen-year-old, already taller than me, bumbles into the garage, his backpack loosely tossed over one shoulder. He looks exhausted. “How’d you sleep last night, hon?” “Like crap. I kept hearing that noise again.” “Watch your language around your brother. Was it that scratching sound again?” “Yeah. It sounds like a raccoon or something. Just shuffling around all night.” Damn it. I had heard that a neighbor had rats in their attic early in the summer, before we moved in. “I think we’d know if we had a raccoon in the garage.” I say. “They’re pretty big.” “Would we though? The garage is still full of boxes. I’m telling you, mom. Whatever is moving around in here at night is definitely something pretty big. It sounds weird.” I open the garage door, and start backing out. “I believe you, hon. I just don’t think it’s a raccoon. I mean, do you think Charlie would let a raccoon hang out in here?” Liam smiles. We bought Charlie for him nearly ten years ago. A big lab-mix from a shelter. “No, but Charlie is pretty lazy. And he sleeps with you and dad upstairs.” “We haven’t seen any poop,” says Taylor. “Raccoon poop is pretty big. I saw it the woods once.” “Ew. When did you see raccoon poop?” Liam asks. “When we found that dead raccoon near the shed.” “What dead raccoon?” I ask. “Why didn’t you tell me about it?” “I don’t know. I guess I forgot.” “By our shed?” "Yeah, I was playing by the boulders with Sam and Bowen. We found two dead raccoons, actually. One had it’s rib cage sticking out, and the other was just, like a flat raccoon, without any bones. It was just fur. Like a rug.” “Oh my God. Did you touch them?” “No. Gross, mom. Sam poked one with a stick, but it stunk really bad, and there were a lot of flies, so we left and played Switch at his house. I guess I forgot to tell you about it.”
Damn it. I feel queasy, thinking about my baby boy stumbling into raccoon carcasses behind the house. I feel like a shitty mom, letting something else keep my other boy awake all night. Something in the garage that I haven’t unpacked and organized.
I pull up to Taylor’s school. Both boys get out. Liam will walk to the high school from here. “I don’t think we have a raccoon infestation.” I say before they open their doors. “But I’ll ask dad to call an exterminator to come look this weekend.” “Bye mom!” they shout, already looking for friends.
“What do you mean the exterminator can’t come until next weekend?” I ask Paul, frustrated. “He said that he’s booked up all week. They can come next Friday at the earliest.” “Ok. But maybe we could at least move around some boxes on Sunday. Look around for signs of whatever is rustling around.” "Or, we could just relax on Sunday.” He says, and gets up from the table.
Relaxing sounds so good. My shoulders are tense from too much time in front of a keyboard, pushing pixels. My hips hurt from sitting for too long in a shitty office chair. My eyes are tired. I stir the end of of my G&T. “I don’t even know what is in those boxes.” Paul says. “Could we just load them up and take them to Goodwill? We’ve been living without that shit since August. Do we really need it?” “Probably not. But I know one of those boxes has your baseball card collection. One of them is full of my mom’s stuff. We got rid of most of our junk when we packed. This is the sentimental stuff.” “Christ. A whole garage full of sentiment?” “Yeah,” I say. “It’s a lot.” I rub my eyes. I’m so tired. “Let’s just go to bed.”
I don’t wake up refreshed. The tension in my shoulders has turned into a full on headache. Paul is probably right. We probably do need to just take it easy this weekend. I start the Keurig. No one else is up yet. It’s still dark. I take my daily meds, Lexapro, Clariten, Vitamin D, and today three ibuprofen. My hands are a little tingly, like they fell asleep.
We don’t clean the garage over the weekend. Liam slept at his friend’s house, and without him pestering me, I blocked it out, watching Netflix and procrastinating the usual weekly cleaning and cooking.
Sunday evening though, he reminds me.
“Mom! I’m not going to be able to sleep tonight!” “We made an appointment with an exterminator. The soonest he can come is Friday. It’s just one more week, love.” He looks a lot better, having spent the weekend away. His eyes aren’t as sunken. But he still looks paler than I remember him being, and his face looks mottled. A little yellow. A little green. A little blue. Patches of white. I can’t believe I hadn’t noticed how bad he was looking; it must have gradually crept up. “Mom, my feet and hand have been tingling. It’s getting worse. I think it’s because I’m not sleeping.” “Do you want me to call a doctor?” “Yeah, I think so.” Liam is not my dramatic child. He’s never been quick to ask for help. “Ok. I’ll make an appointment tomorrow.”
“So, how long have you been in the area?” asks the pediatrician. He’s masked, and he has that mumble that takes me a second to understand. “We moved up here in August.” I say. “Loving this fall. We don’t have weather like this until January in Houston.” “Yeah, the weather is better here. Lots of fun things to do. But some people can’t handle the bugs.” I laugh. “Yeah, we’re moving from Houston. We know about bugs.” “Ok.” he says placatingly. “There are a lot of spiders.” I say, feeling as though I shut him down. I want my son’s doctor to like me. “Yeah. Orb weavers are out this time of year.” “Oh, yeah, I think I know which ones you're talking about. Their webs are bigger than dinner plates right?” “Yeah. They’re one of the good ones, though. Looks like you’ve got a slight fever, son.” He says to Liam. He takes out a small flashlight, and shines it on Liam’s spottled face. “Let me take a look at your feet.”
Well, that seems weird. I wonder what kind of doctor this is exactly, and if I ought to tell Liam to keep his shoes on and leave. But we stay.
Liam takes off his giant sneakers and socks that smell like blue cheese dressing.
“Can you extend your leg? I need to see your sole.” Liam stretches out his right leg. The doctor shines the light onto the sole. I see small blisters. Some small and white, some rubbed raw, red and just beginning to bleed. I can’t imagine that they aren’t painful. I panic. Liam can’t just have pins and needles. He must be numb not to be walking in pain. “Do you work?” the doctor asks Liam. “No.” “Do you hang out at a warehouse, or somewhere rodents might also be, like a barn or something?” “No.” Liam says, sort of nervously laughing. “I go to school, I go home, and just like this week, I’ve started going to friends’ houses in the neighborhood. It’s all normal houses and stuff. Well, except ours is kinda next to the woods.” “Do you go out into the woods much?” "Not really. It’s all overgrown right now. My dad wants to make some trails. But we don’t have any yet.” “His little brother plays out there more than Liam does.” I say. “Could he have brought something in?” “Doubtful. This is going to sound worse than it is, but I think you have leprosy. The good news is that it is very treatable. It’s also not very contagious. The bad news is that it is a two-year treatment, and you may have some irreversible nerve damage. I’m going to need a blood sample to confirm.” “Leprosy?” I say, shocked. “We need to confirm it. But these are the classic symptoms. The sooner we get him on treatment the better. Until he starts treatment, he is contagious. Although it doesn’t spread easily, I would quarantine, just to be safe, until I get you the results.” “Sure.” I say.
“Mom, can I stay in your and dad’s room?” Liam asks on the way home. “I really need to sleep, and I can’t sleep with that noise in the garage.” “Let me talk to dad. But I think that’s ok.” I say. I’d be quick to give him anything, I feel so guilty. Liam’s room is right next to the front door. It’s technically the primary bedroom. But Paul didn’t want to sleep next to the front door, and he thought Liam would like having a huge room. That was another reason I didn’t want this house. Who puts their teenager right next to the front door? But there just weren’t any better options. “I’m sure dad will say it’s ok.” I say, wondering if we’ll be able to sleep with noise.
But definitely ready to find out what the fuck is in the garage
